In the last couple of years the two questions I’ve been asked most frequently have been ‘Where to next?’ and ‘When’s the next book coming out?’ Well, I have the answers - ‘Bulgaria’ and ‘Now-ish’. Might sound as a rather short response but I’ll let the new Near Varna book illuminate.

What we have here in Near Varna is the next instalment, another brutally honest and insightful diary in a lifetime of searching for contentment. A reckless gamble based on a gut feeling, giving up everything familiar and relocating. I found Bulgaria had an abundant lack of all the things I didn’t like. This is what happens when you find the courage to say ‘I don’t like it here anymore, I'm going to see what it’s like to live over there.’

On Midsummer’s Day 2015 I embark on what I expected to be an unadventurous European tour with my KTM to present at a couple of Horizon Unlimited events, first to Northern Ireland and then ride across ten borders to Bulgaria. Almost immediately, and some would say inevitably, there were problems and the journey didn’t go according to plan. Facing imminent homelessness, I felt that the oyster my world had previously been was now resembling a mere shell of its former self. Decisions had to be made.

This book is about the thrill of the first few steps in a new location, I ended up living in the European Union’s more easterly member, only 300 miles from the Asian continent. 25 years since the fall of communism it still felt in many ways like a place where east meets west. There was a lot to learn, not least the Cyrillic alphabet and Slavic language. I had moved to a world where I had become speechless and illiterate. This diary takes you through the haphazard transition of giving up on the land I was born into and discovering there is more to the transition than physical relocating. There were many ties from my previous existence that kept pulling me back. A lifetime of travel and something in the way I rode had bought me to a place near Varna, and I was ready to put down roots. The grass was greener and I had high hopes as my dreaded fiftieth birthday loomed on an inescapable horizon.

Orders of Near Varna will come with a free sticker and if you order any 3 products, they come in a pannier box replica.

“Essential reading before you start that big trip” – Motorcycle Sport and Leisure

A refreshingly cynical and humorous account of a solo overland motorcycle journey from England to Mongolia and beyond on an eBay purchased £700 KLR 650

Short listed for ‘Overland Magazine Book of 2012’

route mapSo you find yourself on a TV quiz show and you are asked, “What will you do if you win the money?” Naturally your answer is going to be, “Ride a motorcycle to Mongolia.” And if this quirky start to, ‘In Search of Greener Grass’ doesn’t give you an instant hit of what to expect, then please read on.

This is a book that twists and turns from the very first page. Each subsequent page soaks you to the eyeballs with yet another graphically described adventure. But Graham Field has a very different way of looking at things, and he challenges some preconceived ideas. With just the preparation stage in chapter one, you’ll be surprised and in fact, I’ve read very few books that deal with the pre-trip wrangling’s and battles as well as this. You can tell that he’s a very experienced motorcyclist and traveller; there’s a stack of experience on offer. Something I particularly liked, is that as the adventure on his KLR 650 unfolds, he weaves in exactly how the kit choices he made worked, or didn’t.

His word pictures are excellent and with them he sends you from disasters that hurt, to pretty girls, to tales of the unexpected and to being lost as he crosses the dusty plains of Kazakhstan and Mongolia. It’s kind-hearted, funny, genuine and delightfully honest, and woven into the tale is some very good travel advice. One of my favourite quotes is, ‘Thinking outside the guidebooks, that’s where I like to take my trips.’

He even approaches some usually taboo overlanding topics; saying things that many travellers would not dare to utter. At times his bluntness risks offense, but then almost magically he puts his thoughts into perfectly reasoned acceptability. I particularly liked his excellent way of describing both solo travel, and that with other people he meets along the way. A lesser talented author or less genuine person, could have come across as being pompous and self-opinionated. Not in this case – simply honest, thought provoking and refreshing. He frequently laughs at himself, and that readily adds to the fun.

I laughed a lot and I learnt a lot. ‘In Search of Greener Grass’ is a great window into the people and cultures along Graham Field’s route to Ulan Bator and beyond. It’s a wonderfully eclectic mix of life on the road and everything.

Finding the line between desire and contentment, then riding it.

Ureka - RiDE-Magazine reviewAfter the success of his first book ‘In Search of Greener Grass’, Graham Field hits the road again with his bargain-basement KLR650, recording his experiences in his inimitable and revealingly honest diary style.

The Caucasus region is often overlooked by travellers, but Graham may inadvertently be about to change all that. A single pivotal moment can transform any journey, on this occasion a significant U turn of became a real eureka moment.

The result ensures a fantastic exploration of eastern Europe and beyond, the discovery of a hidden gem in Georgia and meanderings that leave us all much richer.

Who tries to get deep into Iraq just to see if the news reports are accurate, ends up joining a street demonstration against someone else’s government or sticks their arm between the jaws of a wild mountain wolf-dog?

Ultimately, Ureka is an almost accidental realisation that we cannot control our mood on the road, but merely embracing this can be the most enlightening travel experience of all.

U-turn if I want to, is that what I should do?

route mapThe words rang a distant bell. I can’t decide if turning suggests rebellious failure or submissive success, not that it matters. With my determined aspirations I’d overcome the challenges of terrain, bureaucracy, navigation and heat as I rode to the Caspian Sea; it was just that illusive satisfaction that I couldn’t find.

If all my experience had taught me one thing, I was buggered if I knew what it was. I had all the usual ingredients, my trusty KLR, a little bit of money, plenty of time and lots of new countries to ride through. I transited Bulgaria resisting its long-stay temptations, took an excursion into humbling Iraq, then wound on up through the wild surprises of eastern Turkey on the way to Georgia. In Azerbaijan I turned the plan and the map round. It wasn’t just the journey that took a different direction, everything changed…

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt on the road it’s that I never stop learning from the road. Some things are not meant to be and others are; the trick is finding the line between desire and contentment, then riding it.

DIFFERENT NATURES AND THE SPACES IN-BETWEEN

Different Natures reviewDifferent Natures takes you on three journeys. Each gives an honest and passionate insight into the evolution of a compulsive traveller. Looking for direction with the wrong eyes spawned Graham’s lust for wandering, the miles cleared his vision and the hunger for longer distance grows with an insatiable appetite for new experiences.

Based on his diaries spanning a twelve year period of travel from the Arctic Circle to Mexico, Graham Field’s journeys are his life. Inevitably these experiences increase his awareness as he passes through various natures of both a reluctant maturity and the extreme environments between his destinations.

From midnight sun to darkest nights, there’s as much diversity in these tales as common threads.

I wanted to call this book ‘The Motorcycle Dairies – Milking the Success of the First Two Books’ however I was advised by authors of experience and wisdom to choose a more sensible title. You’d know the people in question but it would be wrong to start name dropping in the first paragraph. The reason for my original title was because, instead of riding off in search of new subject matter, I regressed into my diaries to recall past trips. However I ended up totally reliving the journeys (which is why I suppose, I keep a diary). As I read and reflected, I saw patterns, insights and events that instigated what was to come, it all made perfect sense. This is a book of three different journeys that pave the way to and between my other books, filling in spaces and answering questions. They all start in Colorado, where, for a while I lived my other life, the place I’d run to when I wanted to escape my Essex existence.

route mapThe first journey was in 2001, 10 States in 13 days. Reading through that diary, I was slightly disturbed to see how debauched my life was then. Looking back with wiser eyes it’s no wonder that I struggled to cope with reality, when I put so much effort into avoiding it. However, I found myself both smiling and cringing at those self-indulgent and mostly innocent days.

The second journey was in 2007, a 12,000 mile trip to Alaska, with two friends, at least on the way up. There I found a wilderness I didn’t even know I was missing, and the seed was sown for the search of greener grass.

The third story is from 2012, solo to Mexico by both circumstance and preference. My expectations weren’t great but the events exceeded them. A motorcycle ride is always remarkable, this one was the precursor to the journey to Iraq that inspired Ureka.

Good news, the box set is back.

Well, you asked for it.

A year had passed since I went the studio to record In Search of Greener Grass the response to my first audio book had been very enthusiastic.

So once again I spend a week in a recording booth to record Eureka.

There is a sample chapter below.

Due to extensive market research, I kept getting emails saying 'I don’t have a way of playing discs any more' This book is available on a USB Flash drive. It isn’t nearly as spectacular as the creative genius of the ISOGG Audiobook 'discs' nor does it have the informative explanations and photos that the gatefold sleeve of In Search of Greener Grass had but that's progress for you. A generation of people who don't know the thrill of immersing themselves in a world of the double album cover.

This digital pocket size stick has the Eureka theme song and about 15 hours of unabridged dialogue from my acclaimed second book Eureka.

Available now for immediate delivery.

I have a very limited quantity as most people prefer to forgo the free sticker and pay more by downloading the book from iTunes and Audible the choice is entirely yours.

Cheers

Graham

Those who have read all three say that Different Natures is the best written of them all. Yet it’s the worst selling; well one of them has to be.

So now is the opportunity to determine if it’s the best audio book of the three.

I have a very limited number of the USB versions of the book available. This is for two reasons, firstly once it’s available on Audible and iTunes etc. the USB sales drop off. Secondly, I just wanted to have something of a bonus for those few buyer/listeners, a thank you for not buying from one click multinational giants who take the lion’s share of your money when I did all hard work. This option is much cheaper than the download. Plus, you will, as with any purchase, get a free sticker.
